The International Helmut Deutsch Song Competition is Vienna's first and only regular competition for singers that is exclusively dedicated to the song works of Austrian composers. In addition to famous names such as Schubert, Wolf and Mahler, the focus is also on a tone poet who has faded in popularity but has not been forgotten. The competition will take place for the first time in 2018. It is intended to offer young talents a jump-start in their careers and the opportunity to prove themselves in front of a critical audience.

Helmut German
Helmut Deutsch is one of the most sought-after and successful song accompanists in the world. Born in Vienna, he studied at the conservatory, the music academy and the university in his hometown, received the composition prize of the city of Vienna and became a professor at the age of 24. Even during his student days, his main interest was focused on the song, but he also worked for several decades as a chamber musician in all imaginable formations with many world-class instrumentalists. His international career as an accompanist began with the soprano Irmgard Seefried, but the most important singer of his younger years was Hermann Prey, whose permanent partner he was in several hundred concerts for twelve years. As a result, he worked with a large number of the most important lieder singers and played in all the important music centers in the world. Helmut Deutsch was a professor for song interpretation in Vienna, Salzburg, Frankfurt and Munich, gives master classes worldwide and is a juror in numerous international competitions.
