Sein erstes Werk komponierte Gustav Mahler mit sechs Jahren. 22 Lebensjahre – und eine steile Karriere als Dirigent – später vollendete er seine erste Symphonie. Dem schweren Erbe dieser Gattung stellte er sich voller Idealismus, gar Übermut und schuf nichts weniger als eine musikalische Feier des Lebens. „Titan“ taufte er sein Werk – ein menschlicher Riese, im Grunde aber: die gesamte Schöpfung mit ihren jauchzenden Höhen wie quälenden Tiefen des Daseins. Mit diesem Werk eröffnet Generalmusikdirektor Kent Nagano die Philharmonische Reihe der Saison 2023/24 – ein Paukenschlag, dem ein Frühwerk Anton Weberns vorausgeht: Idyllisch und freudvoll in der Grundstimmung lässt es den Sommerwind aus den Verszeilen eines Romans von Bruno Wille lebendig werden. Weberns romantisch verhaftete Musik öffnet sich durch Interpolationen des Chores LauschWerk der Vokalmusik aus Mittelalter und Renaissance. Eine musikalische Zeitreise.

Gustav Mahler composed his first work at the age of six. Twenty-two years of life - and a stellar career as a conductor - later, he completed his first symphony. He faced the difficult legacy of this genre full of idealism, even exuberance, and created nothing less than a musical celebration of life. He christened his work "Titan" - a human giant, but basically: the entire creation with its exultant heights as well as agonizing depths of existence. With this work, General Music Director Kent Nagano opens the Philharmonic series of the 2023/24 season - a drumbeat preceded by an early work by Anton Webern: idyllic and joyful in its basic mood, it brings to life the summer wind from the verse lines of a novel by Bruno Wille. Webern's romantic music opens up to vocal music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance through interpolations by the choir LauschWerk. A musical journey through time.
