As a motto, so to speak, the bold encounter between typically French and equally typically Russian music:  La Mer , Debussy's most famous symphonic creation, misleads one into thinking that the program is at work here – far from it. This work thinks more abstractly than it pretends and leads the picture to the idea. And in the idea, Russian and French meet perfectly, apart from the fact that French was the language of the educated in 19th-century Russia. Debussy, of all people, deeply grips Mussorgsky's music and orients his figuration, especially in the treatment of language, to his Boris Godounov . It is his equally famous colleague Ravel who – fascinated by the piano piece Pictures at an Exhibition, which translates the radical structures of the piano work into not only luminous but "thinking colors" - as in the painting and poetry of France around 1900.

Gleichsam als Motto, die kühne Begegnung von typisch französischer mit ebenso typisch russischer Musik: La Mer, Debussys gewiss berühmteste symphonische Schöpfung verführt zum Irrtum, es sei hier Programmatik am Werk – weit gefehlt. Dieses Werk denkt abstrakter als es vorgibt und führt das Bild zur Idee. Und in der Idee begegnen sich Russisches und Französisches perfekt, abgesehen davon, dass Französisch die Sprache der Gebildeten Russlands im 19. Jahrhundert war. Ausgerechnet Debussy ergreift die Musik Mussorgskis zutiefst und er orientiert seine Figuration, vor allem in der Sprachbehandlung, an dessen Boris Godounow. Sein ebenso berühmter Kollege Ravel ist es, der – fasziniert vom Klavierstück Bilder einer Ausstellung, die radikalen Strukturen des Klavierwerks in nicht nur leuchtende – sondern „denkende Farben“ umsetzt – wie in der Malerei und Poesie des Frankreich um 1900.
