The admirers of his ward Grilletta are a thorn in the side of the old pharmacist Sempronio. He would like to lead the young beauty down the aisle himself. Grilletta doesn't like the prospect at all. She already has to defend herself against the rich dandy Volpino, although her heart has long belonged to the shy pharmacy assistant Mengone. You don't need too much imagination to imagine the happy ending that the story leads to: Two find each other - and two others look down the drain.

With Joseph Haydn's opera "Lo Speziale" ("The Apothecary"), the new princely opera house at Észterhaza Palace was opened in September 1768, where Haydn had been court conductor since 1761. ( Also read the detailed magazine article from the play! >>) The composer resorted to a libretto by Carlo Goldoni, which he (or whoever) cut down massively: three roles and about a third of all scenes fell victim to the scissors. However, the handwriting of the great Italian comedy writer is still clearly recognizable in the lively character drawings and the tortuous plot of intrigues. Haydn wrote sparkling, entertaining music for this, which burns off a virtuoso vocal firework - it is hard to understand why this turbulent operatic fun could not find its place in the repertoire.

The Dutchman Jan Willem de Vriend, this season's first guest conductor of the Duisburg Philharmonic, has worked with the director Eva Buchmann on a semi-staged production of the piece, which has already caused enthusiasm in the Cologne Philharmonic, the Tonhalle in Zurich and the broadcasting hall of the Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt. At the center of the lively staging is a rickety Fiat 500, which is a pharmacy on wheels, a herb garden and a shower cubicle at the same time - and if necessary, a lot more. At the same time, this classic vehicle offers an ironic look at the clichéd German longing for Italy, which was fulfilled in the 1950s and 1960s at the “Teuton Grill” in Rimini. What could be better suited to send the audience into the summer break?

Dem alten Apotheker Sempronio sind die Verehrer seines Mündels Grilletta ein Dorn im Auge. Er möchte die junge Schöne nämlich am liebsten selbst zum Traualtar führen. Grilletta behagt diese Aussicht ganz und gar nicht. Sie hat sich schon des reichen Stutzers Volpino zu erwehren, dabei gehört ihr Herz doch längst dem schüchternen Apotheken-Gehilfen Mengone. Man braucht nicht allzu viel Phantasie, um sich das Happy End vorzustellen, in das die Geschichte mündet: Zwei finden zueinander – und zwei andere schauen in die Röhre.

Mit Joseph Haydns Oper „Lo Speziale“ („Der Apotheker“) wurde im September 1768 das neue fürstliche Opernhaus auf Schloss Észterhaza eröffnet, wo Haydn seit 1761 als Hofkapellmeister in Diensten stand. In der lebensprallen Charakterzeichnung und der windungsreichen Intrigenhandlung ist die Handschrift des großen italienischen Komödiendichters allerdings immer noch klar zu erkennen. Haydn schrieb dazu eine prickelnde, kurzweilige Musik, die ein virtuoses Stimmfeuerwerk abbrennt – es ist kaum zu verstehen, warum dieser turbulente Opernspaß im Repertoire nicht heimisch werden konnte.

Der Niederländer Jan Willem de Vriend, in dieser Spielzeit Erster Gastdirigent der Duisburger Philharmoniker, hat gemeinsam mit der Regisseurin Eva Buchmann eine halbszenische Produktion des Stückes erarbeitet, die unter anderem bereits in der Kölner Philharmonie, der Tonhalle Zürich und dem Sendesaal des Hessischen Rundfunks in Frankfurt für Begeisterung sorgte. Im Zentrum der quirligen Inszenierung steht ein klappriger Fiat 500, der rollende Apotheke, Kräutergarten und Duschkabine zugleich ist – und bedarfsweise auch noch manches mehr. Mit diesem klassischen Gefährt fällt zugleich ein ironischer Blick auf die klischeebehaftete deutsche Italiensehnsucht, die sich in den 50er und 60er Jahren am „Teutonengrill“ von Rimini erfüllte. Was könnte besser geeignet sein, um das Publikum in die Sommerpause zu entlassen?
