In 1815 Rossius (1792-1868) was visited by Duke Francesco Sforza-Cesarini, impresario of the famous Roman theater di Torre Argentina. The composer undertook to set to music the libretto presented to him by the duke, and a month later to deliver the finished score. The subject needed to be approved by the censors, which proved to be very difficult. All submitted librettos were rejected - except for the Barber of Seville. Rossini was not enthusiastic about this, because there was another Barber of Seville, whose author was the renowned doyen Giovanni Paisiello. Rossini was well aware that the old maestro and his opera had a number of supporters who might be uncomfortable with the release of the new work. So he wrote a polite letter to Paisiell, humbly explaining why he dared to compose an opera on the same subject. Paisiello replied that he warmly welcomed the intention: he quietly assumed that the opera would fail. He wasn't wrong. When it premiered in 1816, the opera actually ended in fiasco. That evening, however, none of the spectators knew that he had just whistled at one of the most famous and popular operas of the future.

Der italienische Komponist Gioachino Rossini wurde vor allem durch seine fast vierzig Opern berühmt. Sein spritziger melodischer Ideenreichtum, sein Witz und die sinnvolle Orchestrierung machten aus ihm einen begehrten Komponisten, der mit Bestellungen überhäuft wurde. Die Figur des schlitzohrigen Barbiers Figaro aus dem ursprünglich französischen Schauspiel von Pierre Beaumarchaise ist heute allgemein bekannt, und einen großen Verdienst daran haben vor allem Rossini und seine Oper. Der junge Komponist war von diesem Libretto ursprünglich keinesfalls begeistert, denn es gab zu dieser Zeit noch einen anderen Barbier von Sevilla, von dem namhaften Doyen Giovanni Paisiello, aber alle anderen eingereichten Libretti wurden von der Zensur abgelehnt. Bei der Premiere 1816 endete Rossinis Barbier mit einem Fiasko. An diesem Abend ahnte das Publikum noch nicht, dass es gerade eine der berühmtesten und beliebtesten Opern der Zukunft ausbuhte. Es ist kaum zu glauben, dass der Barbier von Sevilla schon über zweihundert Jahre alt ist – der schalkhafte Friseur Figaro beherrscht nach wie vor nicht nur sein Rasiermesser, sondern auch seinen gepfefferten Scharfsinn, durch den der Graf Almaviva die Liebe der anmutigen Rosina gewinnt. Die Mitglieder des überwiegend italienischen Inszenierungsteams bereiteten für das Brünner Publikum eine schöne Schau im Stil der Commedia dell‘ Arte vor.

Mladý hrabě Almaviva se zamiloval do krásné dívky Rosiny a chce si ji vzít. Jenže zájem o ni a hlavně její věno má i starší doktor Bartolo, který je Rosinin poručník. Naštěstí se na scéně objeví Almavivův starý známý – lazebník Figaro. Ten je vždy připraven s nějakou malou intrikou či převlekem a po řadě ztřeštěných situací nakonec získá pro Almavivu ruku jeho milované. Kdo by čekal, že jedna z nejslavnějších a nejoblíbenějších oper světa vstoupí na jeviště za velkého skandálu. Pískot publika, černá kočka na jevišti, rozladěná kytara. Co se mohlo pokazit, se pokazilo, nic ale nedokázalo vzít krásu Rossiniho jiskřivým melodiím a vtip povedenému libretu. A tak i dnes na diváky v divadle čekají virtuózní pěvecké výkony a melodie, které si budete broukat cestou domů.
