Richard Strauss composed the tone poem »Death and Transfiguration« as a young man. A terminally ill person struggles with death. His passing redeems him from suffering and leads to transfiguration. At the end of his life in 1948, Strauss dealt with his own approaching end of life and set four poems by Joseph von Eichendorff and Hermann Hesse to moving orchestral songs. He quotes the transfiguration motif from his early symphonic poetry. Gabriel Fauré's lullaby opens the dance of life with soft tones. Mozart's song "Evening Sensation to Laura" adds another touching facet to the broad emotional spectrum.
