Zoltán Kodály's orchestral poem “Summer Evening”, composed in 1906, begins like the gentle lament of a shepherd in the midst of a Hungarian landscape. And his “Psalmus Hungaricus” from 1923, in which Kodály sets the 1561 translation of the 55th Psalm by the Hungarian preacher Mihály Kecskeméti to music, even bears his Hungarian origin in the title. "If I hadn't studied old Hungarian literature, I would never have thought of composing this work," Kodály once said. »No Hungarian composer can be productive who does not absorb the living musical tradition, allow it to flourish and continue it in his own way.« And with the Hungarian interpreters Gergely Madaras and István Horváth, both works are in authentic hands.

In hardly any other work by Schumann does it blossom as happily as in his first, the so-called "Spring Symphony". Even the biography points to happy occasions everywhere: Shortly before this, his song cycle “Love Spring” was written, a collection of songs that Robert and Clara composed at the same time and published together as an expression of their love. In addition, the Schumanns received the happy and long-awaited news that they would soon be blessed with children. A better, spring-like, cheerful end to the concert on this May morning is hard to imagine.
