Ever since 1905, when the music world celebrated the premiere of Richard Strauss' groundbreaking opera Salome, we have had a certain image of the main character: as a victim and seductress at the same time. Florent Schmitt's purely instrumental ballet music tells us a significantly different story: here the perspective of Salome as a victim of complex circumstances prevails. In Schmitt's work, completed in 1907, Salome even tries to 'save Jochanaan's head', while in Strauss she constantly screams for him. Schmitt's piece was so enthusiastically received by the audience that in 1909 the composer extracted a suite from the original music that was suitable for the concert hall.

Benjamin Britten created his song cycle "Les Illuminations" on the basis of some of Arthur Rimbaud's poems. With a surprising fanfare in the string orchestra, he makes a wild entry into Britten's dazzling world of sound. Finally, Claude Debussy's "Trois Nocturnes" are even more colorful and wonderfully brooding. These in turn are based on the view of a painting entitled "Nocturne" by the American painter James McNeill Whistler. Extraordinary sounds of the woodwind are juxtaposed at the beginning of the work, as if it were about composing »prehistoric music«. Chords stand firmly in the timeless space, rows of notes incline »cultic« downwards. Something like a »sermon« of the english horn only begins late...

An evening full of perfume, full of exotic orchestra scents - for lovers of late romantic-impressionistic discoveries!
