6. Philharmonisches Konzert: Messiah Händel

Georg Friedrich Handel's most famous oratorio is at the same time his most atypical. Most of his English-language oratorio works are almost disguised operas with a plot and assigned roles. Not so the "Messiah". This is a reflection on the life and meaning of Jesus. The text is an elaborate collage of Bible quotes put together by Charles Jennes. But although the drama of a plot is missing in “Messiah” and despite the cautious doubts that Jennes expressed about Handel's composition, the oratorio began its triumphant advance, which is still unbroken to this day, when it was first performed in Dublin in 1742 in front of 600 crowded spectators. Hallelujah!
