"It was like a flash of vision - the whole thing immediately appeared before my eyes and I only had to write it down, as if it had been dictated to me." Gustav Mahler's Eighth Symphony is considered an exceptional work in music history due to its scope and its scoring with an extraordinarily large orchestra, eight vocal soloists, two large mixed choirs and a boys' choir. In the first part of the symphony, Mahler set the Latin Pentecost hymn Veni, creator spiritus from the 9th century to music, in the second, the final scene from Goethe's Faust, in which the transfiguration of Faust's striving spirit takes place and which ends with the famous lines: "Everything transient is only a parable; the inadequate, here it becomes an event. The indescribable, here it is done. The eternal feminine draws us in."

The Chemnitz performance of this monumental work - for the first time in more than 100 years - is made possible by a collaboration between Robert-Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra and the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra. The two Chemnitz concerts will be followed by a joint concert in Jena on March 8, 2024, which will also be the "90 Years of the Jena Philharmonic" anniversary concert. The musical director will be Simon Gaudenz, General Music Director of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018, who has already had a lasting impact on the city's musical life with new and innovative ideas in the first few years of his tenure. These included the Mahler-Scartazzini cycle, a project that attracted international attention and earned the orchestra invitations to festivals such as the Gustav Mahler Musikwochen in Toblach. Composer Andrea Scartazzini, Composer in Residence at the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018, has written a new work for each of the Mahler symphonies performed during this period. At the end of the cycle, there will be ten works that can be performed individually or in groups before the Mahler symphonies, but also as a complete evening-long work.

Andrea Scartazzini, born in 1971, has dedicated himself to the task with great passion from the very beginning. The dialectic of distance and proximity is how he relates a new work to the respective Mahler symphony. He looks at the Mahler symphony in a similar way to a viewer approaching an object in a museum, who can walk around the work in the room and move away from it again. However, Scartazzini does not establish a distanced relationship with Production , but rather traces the ways in which his new work can enter into a symbiotic relationship with the respective Mahler symphony. The entire cycle will be released on CD by the Odradek label.
