Peter Gülke is one of the most important German conductors and musicologists. The conductor, who was born in Weimar in 1935, is also heavily involved in promoting young conductors. 

In addition to Robert Schumann's 4th symphony, for his concert with the Staatsorchester he chose two rarely played composers: Max Reger and Friedrich Goldmann. Goldmann, born in Siegmar-Schönau in 1941, was one of the leading composers in the former GDR. In 1971 he composed his third essay for orchestra. 

Max Reger called his Böcklin tone poems an “excursion into the field of program music” . The composer based the work from 1913 on four of the most famous paintings by the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin, including The Violinist Hermit and The Island of the Dead.
