Zu Pfingsten 1836 in Düsseldorf uraufgeführt, leistete Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy mit seinem Paulus einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung der Gattung Oratorium im 19. Jahrhundert.

Gegliedert in zwei Teile, beschreibt das Sakralwerk den Werdegang des Titelhelden vom Saulus zum Paulus. Werden zunächst dessen Christenverfolgung und anschließende Läuterung dank der Erscheinung Christi nahe Damaskus thematisiert, berichtet der zweite Teil von Paulus‘ Tätigkeit als Missionar. Mit einem Appell zur Bekehrung wendet sich Mendelssohn Bartholdy abschließend an das Publikum.

Seit der Weihe der wieder aufgebauten Dresdner Frauenkirche 2005 besteht eine regelmäßige Zusammenarbeit dieser Institution mit dem Philharmonischen Orchester Altenburg Gera.

Paulus Oratorio op. 36 First performed in Düsseldorf at Whitsun 1836, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy made a decisive contribution to the further development of the oratorio genre in the 19th century

with his Paulus .

Divided into two parts, the sacred work describes the career of the title hero from Saul to Paul. First, his persecution of Christians and subsequent purification thanks to the appearance of Christ near Damascus are discussed, and the second part reports on Paul's activity as a missionary. Finally, Mendelssohn Bartholdy addresses the audience with an appeal for conversion.

Since the consecration of the reconstructed Dresden Frauenkirche in 2005, this institution has regularly collaborated with the Altenburg Gera Philharmonic Orchestra.
