Bartók a trente ans lorsqu'il compose cette œuvre charnière sur un livret de Bela Balázs. Pour le compositeur, Le Château de Barbe-Bleue est l'œuvre des grandes premières : son premier (et unique) opéra, sa première œuvre vocale et le premier opéra véritablement hongrois. Tout en puisant dans le répertoire de la musique populaire hongroise, le compositeur affirme avec cette œuvre une véritable soif de renouveau. Et signe l'une des pièces fondamentales du tournant moderniste du XXe siècle. En un acte, ce court opéra mise davantage sur l'efficacité que sur le lyrisme. Si le livret donne une place centrale à la musicalité de la langue hongroise, c'est bien la partition, très imagée, qui déploie la dramaturgie de l'œuvre, et les non-dits et sentiments qui s'y nichent. Exploitant au mieux l'ambiguité de ce Barbe-Bleue, le metteur en scène ukrainien Andriy Zholdak en offre, dans la même soirée, deux mises en scène radicales, intenses et sensuelles, permettant de mettre en exergue les différentes manières dont une même œuvre, une même action peut être perçue.

Bartók was thirty years old when he composed this pivotal work to a libretto by Bela Balázs. For the composer, Bluebeard's Castle is the work of great premieres: his first (and only) opera, his first vocal work and the first truly Hungarian opera. While drawing from the repertoire of Hungarian popular music, the composer affirms with this work a real thirst for renewal. And signs one of the fundamental pieces of the modernist turn of the XX thcentury. In one act, this short opera relies more on efficiency than on lyricism. If the libretto gives a central place to the musicality of the Hungarian language, it is indeed the score, very colorful, which deploys the dramaturgy of the work, and the unspoken and feelings which nest there. Making the most of the ambiguity of this Bluebeard, the Ukrainian director Andriy Zholdak offers, in the same evening, two radical, intense and sensual stagings, allowing to highlight the different ways in which the same work, the same action can be perceived.
