The Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari is one of the largest and most prestigious theaters in Italy. At this year's May Festival, the opera house is presenting two long-running favorites from the Italian repertoire, namely the rousing opera "Aida" and the monumental "Messa da Requiem" by Giuseppe Verdi.

Since its premiere in 1871, Verdi's »Aida« has been an absolute worldwide success on all opera stages. The work owes its continued popularity not least to the legendary triumphal march with the so-called »Aida trumpets« specially developed for it. But the plot, set by lyricist Antonio Ghislanzoni in a fictional ancient Egypt, is full of tragedy and heartbreaking emotions: Radamès, the newly appointed Egyptian general, and the Ethiopian king's daughter Aida, who is being held captive in Egypt as a slave, are immortal in love with each other. However, since their two home countries are at war, they must keep their love a secret. Through a chain of unfortunate circumstances, the story soon takes a dramatic turn and ensures that

The musical direction for both works is in the hands of Giampaolo Bisanti, General Music Director at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari since 2016. Born in Milan, the conductor studied at the Verdi Conservatory in his hometown and since then has not only been a regular guest at almost all the important opera houses and major festivals in Italy (including Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Maggio Musicale in Florence, Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa), but is also one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation internationally, as impressively illustrated by guest engagements from Seoul to Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Strasbourg, Berlin, Vienna, Lisbon, Barcelona, ​​Dresden and Munich to Tokyo.

The tenor Roberto Aronica, who will take on the role of Radamès in »Aida«, comes from Civitavecchia and studied singing with Carlo Bergonzi and at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. In 1992 he made his debut in Verdi's »Rigoletto« at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago. Especially in the Italian subject, he was quickly engaged internationally at the major opera houses: Toulouse, Florence, Venice, Houston, San Francisco and Chicago. Recent engagements have taken him a.o. to the Zurich Opera, the Metropolitan Opera New York, the London Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Paris Opéra Bastille.

With Leah Crocetto, an absolutely exceptional singer takes on the title role in »Aida«, whose »agile coloratura technique, with a sure feeling for the Italian style […] with warmth, full, penetrating sound and tenderness« was praised by the New York Times. Her performance of Aida at Opera Australia was also described by one critic as "a revelation [...] nothing can prepare you for hearing such breathtaking vocal control." A perfect, abrupt pianissimo, cleverly used in ›O, patria mia!‹, was just one of many moments that captivated the audience.«
