Teaser Akhnaten 2021

Akhenaten was one of the most significant pharaohs of ancient Egypt. He succeeded in effect in imposing one of the first monotheisms in history, making Ra, the sun god, the one and only divinity of his kingdom.

When the American composer Philip Glass decides to dedicate several operas to great figures in history, Akhenaton clearly imposes himself on him. After Einstein on the Beach (1976) and Satyagraha (1980), Aknathen brilliantly brings this trilogy to a close. Using texts from the period, including a poem by Akhenaten himself, the book covers his reign, as brilliant as it was original, from his accession to the throne after the death of his father Amenophis III, until his fall. Akhnaten contains some key moments of minimalist music, such as the brilliant coronation scene!

Bringing together all the vital forces of our institution, Choir, Ballet and Orchestra, this work is an opportunity to start the season under the best auspices. For the musical direction, Léo Warynski , one of the great music specialists of our time, and for the staging and choreography, Lucinda Childs, faithful of the first hour of Philip Glass: she was already dancing during the creation of Einstein on the Beach  !

Akhenaton fut l’un des pharaons les plus marquants de l’Égypte ancienne. Il réussit en effet à imposer l’un des premiers monothéismes de l’histoire, faisant de Râ, le dieu soleil, la seule et unique divinité de son royaume.

Quand le compositeur américain Philip Glass décide de consacrer plusieurs opéras à de grandes figures de l’histoire, Akhenaton s’impose à lui avec évidence. Après Einstein on the Beach (1976) et Satyagraha (1980), Aknathen vient clore avec brio cette trilogie. Utilisant des textes de l’époque, dont un poème d’Akhenaton lui-même, l’ouvrage parcourt son règne aussi brillant qu’original depuis son accession au trône après la mort de son père Aménophis III, jusqu’à sa chute. Akhnaten recèle quelques moments phares de la musique minimaliste, comme la géniale scène du couronnement !

Réunissant toutes les forces vives de notre institution, Chœur, Ballet et Orchestre, cet ouvrage est l’occasion de commencer la saison sous les meilleurs auspices. À la direction musicale, Léo Warynski, l’un des grands spécialistes de la musique de notre temps, et pour la mise en scène et la chorégraphie, Lucinda Childs, fidèle de la première heure de Philip Glass : elle dansait déjà lors de la création d’Einstein on the Beach !
