What is it that fascinates people about Alcina? Is it the common moral concepts that are a foreign word for Alcina, which is why she lures men to her island, enchants them and, if she is tired of them, transforms them into animals, plants or stones? Or is it the touching music of Handel, through which he portrays Alcina as a selfish sorceress and equally as a loving woman?
In the new production for the Handel Festival in Halle, Niels Badenhop unleashes baroque stage magic. In his own words: “Alcina is a magic opera, a psychological drama, a dance opera. Alcina will visually abduct the viewer into a baroque wonderland: all possibilities of the stage technology of the baroque period are used. The costume design will also be presented accordingly - magical costumes, knights, amazons, beasts, baroque chimeras and monsters - the whole range of baroque aesthetics will be revived, based on original designs of the time. "
