Dès ses jeunes années, Beethoven s’imposa comme le « Grand Moghol » de la musique (pour reprendre la formule de Joseph Haydn), mais il n’opéra sa « révolution expressive » qu’à partir de sa Symphonie n° 3 « Eroica » en 1805. L’œuvre sonna comme un coup de tonnerre dans le ciel du classicisme : jamais auparavant une symphonie n’avait proposé de telles dimensions ni, surtout, un tel élan dramatique. Beethoven provoqua le même élargissement des horizons orchestraux et poétiques en 1809 avec le Concerto pour piano n° 5 « L’Empereur », avec une partie de clavier colossale, aux limites des possibilités sonores des instruments d’alors.
L’Orchestre du XVIIIe Siècle a largement contribué à dépoussiérer l’interprétation des chefs-d’œuvre classiques et la disparition de son fondateur, Frans Brüggen, n’a nullement entamé sa perfection sonore, d’autant que Jonathan Darlington figure parmi les maîtres de ce répertoire. Le pianoforte d’Alexander Melnikov, immense beethovénien, ajoute encore à l’intérêt de ce concert, les couleurs de l’instrument se fondant magistralement à celles de l’orchestre.

From an early age, Beethoven imposed himself as the "Great Mughal" of music (to use Joseph Haydn's formula), but he only carried out his "expressive revolution" from his  Symphony No. 3  "Eroica in 1805.  The work sounded like a clap of thunder in the sky of classicism: never before had a symphony offered such dimensions and, above all, such dramatic momentum. Beethoven provoked the same broadening of orchestral and poetic horizons in 1809 with the  Piano Concerto No. 5 "The Emperor" , with a colossal keyboard part, at the limits of the sound possibilities of the instruments of the time.
The 18th Century Orchestra has largely contributed to dusting off the interpretation of classical masterpieces and the death of its founder, Frans Brüggen, has in no way affected its sonic perfection, especially since Jonathan Darlington is one of the masters from this directory. The pianoforte by Alexander Melnikov, an immense Beethovenian, adds even more to the interest of this concert, the colors of the instrument blending masterfully with those of the orchestra.
