Arianna in Naxos : history and curiosities
Ariadne in Naxos - like the other title proposed, Il bourgeois gentleman - was born from the collaboration of  Richard Strauss with the poet and playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal . They were proposed as a unique project based on the juxtaposition of the subject taken from  Le bourgeois gentilhomme  by Molière and the mythological one by Ariadne. They made their debut in 1912 at the Stuttgart Court Theater, with the direction (and the theater company) of Max Reinhardt  and the composer himself on the podium . 

The reaction of the public, however, was lukewarm and the two works were separated and revised, thus enjoying greater success, and a prologue was added to Ariadne auf Naxos . 

The entire 46th Valle d'Itria Festival will develop around the theme of Ariadne, between the baroque world and the recovery of classical culture .
