Ariadne auf Naxus consists of a prologue and one act: the opera. The prologue is based on Molière's comedy Le bourgeois gentilhomme . The idea of ​​the opera is derived from the experiences of the mythological figure Ariadne on the Greek island of Naxos.

On the remote island of Naxos, Ariadne mourns her beloved Theseus. Zerbinetta and her colleagues try to cheer her up, but are unable to change her mind. Then the arrival of the young god Bacchus is announced. Ariadne thinks he is the god of the underworld and is willing to follow him. In the end, both give in to their love for each other.

Ariadne auf Naxus bestaat uit een proloog en één bedrijf: de opera. De proloog is gebaseerd op de komedie Le bourgeois gentilhomme van Molière. Het gegeven van de opera is ontleend aan de belevenissen van de mythologische figuur Ariadne op het Griekse eiland Naxos.

Op het afgelegen eiland Naxos treurt Ariadne om haar geliefde Theseus. Zerbinetta en haar collega’s proberen haar op te vrolijken, maar weten haar niet op andere gedachten te brengen.
