Handel’s Ariodante at Opéra de Paris: Ariodante Händel

If Handel was alive today, it looks like he's resilient. As audiences drifted away from him in 1734–35 and his contract with the King's Theater drew to a close, the composer set about writing Ariodante , an opera seria intended to open the brand new Theater Royal in Covent Garden . As if galvanized by adversity, he delivers a radiant work, as virtuoso as the libretto – taken from an episode of Orlando furiosoof Ariosto – is simple: the princess of Scotland, Ginevra, loves Ariodante to whom she is promised, but a plot led by the traitor Polinesso makes her accuse of infidelity. If we find in this inspired score Handel's most beautiful lament, “Scherza infida”, the whole work is full of virtuoso arias and exudes theatrical intelligence. Enough to stimulate the inspiration of Robert Carsen, who signs after his anthology Alcina at the Opéra national de Paris, the new staging of Ariodante , composed the same year.

Si Haendel vivait aujourd’hui, on dirait qu’il est résilient. Alors qu’en 1734‑1735, le public s’éloigne de lui et que son contrat avec le King’s Theatre touche à sa fin, le compositeur se met à écrire Ariodante, un opera seria destiné à ouvrir le flambant neuf Théâtre royal de Covent Garden. Comme galvanisé par l’adversité, il livre une œuvre rayonnante, aussi virtuose que le livret – tiré d’un épisode d’Orlando furioso de l’Arioste – est simple : la princesse d’Écosse, Ginevra, aime Ariodante à qui elle est promise, mais un complot mené par le traître Polinesso la fait accuser d’infidélité. Si on trouve dans cette partition inspirée le plus beau lamento de Haendel, « Scherza infida », toute l’œuvre regorge d’arias virtuoses et respire l’intelligence théâtrale. De quoi stimuler l’inspiration de Robert Carsen, qui signe après son Alcina d’anthologie à l’Opéra national de Paris, la nouvelle mise en scène d’Ariodante, composé la même année.
