Anyone who doesn't have fun in Mahagonny cannot be helped. Because in the paradise city, which is being built in the opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, everything is allowed. Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny
Wer in Mahagonny keinen Spass hat, dem ist nicht zu helfen. Denn in der Paradiesstadt, die in der Oper von Bertolt Brecht und Kurt Weill errichtet wird, ist alles erlaubt. Genuss ohne Grenzen, Rausch bis zum Exzess. Fressen, Boxen, Saufen, Liebe machen – alles geht. Nur eines ist streng verboten: Am Ende nicht zahlen zu können. Diese Erfahrung macht der Glückssucher Paul Ackermann und kommt dafür auf den elektrischen Stuhl. Die Mahagonny-Oper von Brecht/Weill ist ein grossformatiger Bilderreigen aus der Werkstatt des epischen Musik-Theaters: anarchisch rumorend und gesellschaftskritisch ätzend. Kurt Weills scheinbar simple, aber immer doppelbödige Musik etabliert zwischen eingängigen Songs, hohem Opernton, Shimmy- und Foxtrott­ Adaptionen und Choralpersiflagen einen schrägen Schwung beim Tanz über dem Abgrund. Die Oper sei kulinarisch, schrieb Brecht, aber sie stelle das Kulinarische auch zur Diskussion. Sie greife die Gesellschaft an, die solche Opern benötige. Sie ist Oper und Anti-Oper zugleich und endet mit dem Untergang des «Du darfst»-Paradieses: Es erstickt an sich selbst. Seit der Uraufführung im Jahr 1930, die zu einem der grössten Skandale der Operngeschichte geriet, hat Mahagonny nichts von seiner Aktualität eingebüsst.Die Gesetze der menschlichen Glückseligkeit, die Paul Ackermann im Moment einer grossen Krise findet, lesen sich heute wie ein Hohelied auf den Turbokapitalismus des 21. Jahrhundert: «Nimm dir das Geld, du darfst es!»

Unsere Neuproduktion wird vom Brecht-erfahrenen Regisseur Sebastian Baumgarten in Szene gesetzt, der vor zwei Jahren am Opernhaus Zürich mit Wolfgang Rihms Hamletmaschine einen grossen künstlerischen Erfolg verzeichnete. Kann es für die schillernde Charakterrolle der Witwe Begbick eine attraktivere Besetzung geben als den Sopranstar Karita Mattila? Die finnische Grande Dame singt zum ersten Mal in einer Opernproduktion am Opernhaus Zürich und debütiert in der Partie der resoluten Stadtgründerin und Puffmutter. Die grossartige deutsche Sopranistin Annette Dasch gibt ihr Rollendebüt als Hure Jenny. Fabio Luisi dirigiert eines seiner Wunschstücke.

Enjoyment without limits, intoxication to the point of excess. Eating, boxing, drinking, making love - anything goes. Only one thing is strictly forbidden: not being able to pay at the end. Happiness seeker Paul Ackermann experiences this and is put on the electric chair for it. The mahogany-Opera by Brecht/Weill is a large-format series of images from the workshop of epic music theatre: anarchically rumbling and socially critically corrosive. Kurt Weill's apparently simple, but always ambiguous music establishes an offbeat swing in the dance over the abyss between catchy songs, a high operatic sound, shimmy and foxtrot adaptations and choral persiflage. The opera is culinary, Brecht wrote, but it also puts the culinary up for discussion. She attacks the society that needs such operas. It is opera and anti-opera at the same time and ends with the downfall of the "you may" paradise: it suffocates in itself. Since the premiere in 1930, which turned into one of the biggest scandals in opera history, Mahagonnylost none of its topicality. The laws of human happiness, which Paul Ackermann finds at the moment of a major crisis, read today like a hymn to the turbo capitalism of the 21st century: "Take the money, you can have it!"

Can there be a more attractive cast for the dazzling character role of Widow Begbick than soprano star Karita Mattila? The Finnish grande dame sings for the first time in an opera production at the Zurich Opera House and makes her debut in the role of the resolute city founder and madam. The great German soprano Annette Dasch makes her role debut as whore Jenny. Fabio Luisi conducts one of his dream pieces.
