De componist/dirigent Matthias Pintscher liet zich voor Shirim inspireren door ‘de mooiste liefdesgedichten ooit geschreven’: het Hooglied. Aan de cyclus voor bariton en orkest voegde Pintscher een nieuw deel met koor toe, dat alsnog (het stond oorspronkelijk gepland in januari 2021) zijn Nederlandse première beleeft, met als solist de Nederlandse bariton Thomas Oliemans. Delen uit het imposante Concert voor orkest van de Sloveense Nina Šenk vormen een passend openingswerk.  

Pintschers extatische klankkleuren contrasteren sterk met de aardse muziek die Bartók schreef voor de pantomime De wonderbaarlijke mandarijn. Het verhaal vol seks en geweld kwam niet door de Hongaarse censuur, maar de opwindende muziek werd een succes. Die klinkt nog altijd modern, en nodigt uit tot een nieuwe visuele interpretatie met poppen en dans van de Duda Paiva Company.

The composer/conductor Matthias Pintscher was inspired for Shirim by 'the most beautiful love poems ever written': the Song of Songs . Pintscher added a new part with choir to the cycle for baritone and orchestra, which will still have its Dutch premiere (it was originally planned in January 2021), with the Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans as soloist. Excerpts from the impressive Concerto for Orchestra by the Slovenian Nina Šenk form a fitting opening work.  

Pintscher's ecstatic timbres contrast sharply with the earthy music Bartók wrote for the pantomime The Miraculous Mandarin . The story full of sex and violence did not pass Hungarian censorship, but the exciting music became a success. It still sounds modern, and invites a new visual interpretation with puppets and dance from the Duda Paiva Company.
