Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's charming one-act play Bastien und Bastienneis a gem of opera literature. Hard to believe that it was penned by a twelve-year-old who already revealed his great affinity for the theater with this early work in 1768. The story is quickly told: the young Bastienne is heartbroken because her lover Bastien left her for another, wealthy woman. The experienced magician Colas advises her to pretend and pretend that she no longer loves him. Said and done. When Bastien, who has now realized that all goods and money are not worth as much as tender, sincere love, remorsefully returns to his Bastienne, she rejects him. Colas' advice is needed again. He arranges the long overdue talk between the two, which is followed by a passionate reconciliation,

When this small work was written, major changes were taking place within the genre of opera. There was a trend to break away from the forms reserved exclusively for courtly audiences and to offer musical theater with simple, unfussy works in a language that was understood by everyone. This was intended to give a wider audience access to this art form. To what extent Mozart, at the age of twelve, was able to grasp the scope of this development cannot be said from today's perspective. In any case, he composed a cheerful musical comedy with a lot of fun and wit, which has lost none of its liveliness and freshness to this day. 

Jasna Žarić, who performed here last season with the musical I do! I do! (The musical four-poster bed) made her directorial debut in Chemnitz. Born in Zagreb (Croatia), she has previously worked as a director at the national operas in Zagreb and Sofia, among others. Since 2017 she has been assistant director and evening director at the Chemnitz Opera.
