Do you need to say "Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium" to get people humming along? Beethoven's Ninth is not just the famous ode "To Joy" in the last movement. It is the first symphony ever in which a composer used a choir. (In our concert, it is the Slovakian Philharmonic Choir as well as the Philharmonic Choirs). And at around 70 minutes, it was already longer than normal during Beethoven's lifetime. Moreover, even in its movements without vocals, it still impresses today with its skilful handling of melodies and keys. Reasons enough to look forward to a very special concert.

"Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium"  muss man mehr sagen, um gleich zum Mitsummen anzuregen? Beethovens Neunte ist aber nicht nur die berühmte Ode "An die Freude" im letzten Satz. Sie ist die erste Sinfonie überhaupt, in der ein Komponist einen Chor einsetzte. (In unserem Konzert ist es neben den Philharmonischen Chören auch der Slowakische Philharmonische Chor.) Und mit ihren ca. 70 Minuten sprengte sie schon zu Lebzeiten Beethovens jede normale Länge. Außerdem beeindruckt sie bis heute auch in ihren Sätzen ohne Gesang durch einen kunstvollen Umgang mit Melodien und Tonarten. Gründe genug, um sich auf ein sehr besonderes Konzert zu freuen.
