In juli 1881 schreef Brahms aan een vriend dat hij 'ein ganz ein kleines Klavierkonzert mit einem ganz einem kleinen zarten Scherzo' had gecomponeerd. Dat is typisch Brahmsiaanse scherts, want zijn Tweede pianoconcert is groots, meeslepend en grandioos. Het is een ongebruikelijk stuk, hij voegde zelfs – ongekend voor die tijd – een vierde deel aan het concerto toe. En wat te denken van de prachtige cellosolo in het derde deel? Hannes Minnaar is volgens Gramophone 'een overtuigende toonschilder en een vurig romanticus'. Dat komt goed van pas bij de romantische en kleurrijke muziek van Brahms. Dat hij een van de beste pianisten van Nederland is, blijkt wel uit het feit dat hij de Nederlandse Muziekprijs won en als eerste Nederlander in twintig jaar een concert gaf in de serie Meesterpianisten van Het Concertgebouw.

In July 1881 Brahms wrote to a friend that he had composed 'ein ganz ein kleines Klavierkonzert mit einem ganz einem kleinen zarten Scherzo'. That is typical Brahmsian banter, because his Piano Concerto No. 2 is grand, compelling and grandiose. It is an unusual piece, he even added – unprecedented for that time – a fourth movement to the concerto. And what about the beautiful cello solo in the third movement? This Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 is of unparalleled beauty and power.

Hannes Minnaar is 'a convincing tone painter and an ardent romantic'. That comes in handy with the romantic and colorful music of Brahms. That he is one of the best pianists in the Netherlands is evident from the fact that he won the Dutch Music Prize and was the first Dutchman to give a concert in the Concertgebouw's Master Pianists series in twenty years.
