Bess McNeill is a deeply religious young woman who genuinely loves her husband Jan, a worker on an oil rig. When Bess becomes paralyzed in an accident, Bess' marriage vows are put to the test. Because Jan encourages his wife to sleep with other men. And he wants Bess to tell him about it in detail afterwards. That keeps him alive. Out of love, the traumatized Bess complies with the enormous demand. For a high price.

Film director Lars von Trier caused a stir in 1996 with his film of the same name. 20 years later, the opera version of the story was successfully premiered at the Philadelphia Opera, composed by Missy Mazzoli, a Grammy nominee and recently named "Composer of the Year" by Musical America. Her highly emotional sound portrait, which also repeatedly poses the perpetrator/victim question musically, gives the composer the opportunity to "create a new kind of heroine and a new kind of opera that presents complex characters in a complicated and unshakable light."

Breaking the Waves will have its German premiere at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven.
