The siblings Aninka and Pepíček go to the market to get milk for their sick mother. Since they have no money, they want to imitate the organ grinder Brundibár, who people throw coins into their hats for his music. They sing their favorite song, but nobody listens to them. Only when the cat, dog and sparrow help them round up all the children in town are their singing strong enough and soon Pepíček's hat is full of money. Brundibár wants to snatch them from the boy, but he has no chance against the crowd of children. But in the end it is Aninka and Pepíček who shake hands with the actually overpowering adult in a conciliatory way, so that everyone can celebrate friendly cohesion.

Brundibár is more than an enchanting story about childlike courage and community. The children's opera, composed in 1938, could initially only be shown in secret in a Jewish children's home in Prague. After his deportation to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, the composer Hans Krása rehearsed them with the imprisoned children of the camp. Brundibár was performed there for the first time in September 1943, and 54 other performances followed. Although Krása and many of the children involved fell victim to the Nazi regime, Brundibár was saved from oblivion.
