"Welcome, bienvenue, welcome to Cabaret, au Cabaret, to Cabaret!" We are in the middle of Berlin, at the end of the 20s, becoming part of the amusement-addicted metropolis that dances on the volcano on the eve of the Third Reich. American writer Clifford Bradshaw travels to Berlin drawn by the crackling atmosphere of the big city. On the train he met the likable Ernst Ludwig, who found him cheap accommodation in Fräulein Schneider's guesthouse and introduced him to the frivolous society of the Kit-Kat-Club. Here the singer Sally Bowles dreams of a great career, and Sally and Cliff hope that love at first sight can endure. But the times are not in favor of the private and professional plans: When stones fly in the shop windows of Jewish shops, the late love between Miss Schneider and the greengrocer Mr. Schulz is also in danger. Cliff clearly sees the political danger and wants to leave Germany with Sally, whereas Sally continues to dream of her great career in Berlin. When she aborted their child, the American was left with nothing. But those who stay behind face an uncertain future.

The alternation of large public scenes and small private situations gives the piece its breath; Kander's music, inspired by ragtime and early jazz, as well as the revue-like numbers in the Kit-Kat-Club inserted by Masteroff, which frame the plot, are reminiscent of the musicals of the 1920s.

The music was written by John Kander, the lyrics are by Fred Ebb, the book was written by Joe Masteroff based on the play "I Am a Camera" (1951) by John Van Druten, which is based on the autobiographical novels "Mr. Norris rises to ”(1935) and“ Lebwohl, Berlin ”(1939) based by Christopher Isherwood. The musical premiered on November 20, 1966 at the Broadhurst Theater in New York City. Harold Prince produced and directed the production; in the role of Master of Ceremonies was Joel Gray, seen as Miss Tailor Lotte Lenya.

In the 1972 film adaptation, Liza Minnelli shone as Sally Bowles, and in 1973 the film won eight (!) Oscars.
