Older viewers of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera will surely remember the wonderful, classic performance of Georges Bizet's most famous opera directed by Lech Majewski in the monumental scenery of Janusz Kapusta with costumes designed by Hanna Bakuła. Twenty-three years after its premiere, the popular actor and director Andrzej Chyra undertook the production of Carmen on the same stage. This time, however, the viewers of the Warsaw opera stage had the opportunity to see a masterpiece of world music literature in a completely new, far from classical version

He invited the playwright Małgorzata Sikorska Miszczuk to collaborate on this challenge, in a duet with whom he worked on an outstanding Polish opera of the 21st century - Magic Mountain based on Thomas Mann with music by Paweł Mykietyn. The performance presented during Malta Festival Poznań turned out to be a great success.

In order to throw a new light on the spectacle well-known to the public, the Chyra-Miszczuk tandem introduces the enigmatic figure of a boy and the Devil into the opera, who as the next acts go on scares the little protagonist less and less. It probably symbolizes a fate against which the characters of the play seem powerless. In opposition to the demon - the bull, the title character's attribute are wings growing out of the shoulders.

Georges Bizet wrote Carmen on behalf of the director of the Parisian Opéra-Comique, Camille du Locle. The score was created at the turn of 1874 and 1875. The libretto was created by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy on the basis of a novel by Prosper Mérimée. Since then, Carmen has fascinated artists: playwrights, writers and filmmakers. It is an indisputable icon of femininity. She is a sensual, seductive, passionate and mysterious figure, and at the same time brave, unpredictable, temperamental, unbridled and proud. Above all, however, tragic. Her name functions in the common consciousness, necessarily associating with something that cannot be ignored. It exists in the nomenclature of almost every industry, be it arts, tourism, entertainment, business and even IT.

For decades, it has been played by outstanding artists. Carmen's parts were sung on opera stages, incl. Angela Gheorghiu, Elina Garanča, Anna Caterina Antonacci, Małgorzata Walewska, and even Maria Callas, who played mezzo-soprano parties in the 1960s. Also, the film industry could not resist this character. More than a hundred years ago, in 1918, there was a grand premiere of Carmen starring Pola Negri in the title role, directed by Ernst Lubitch. On the silver screen, Maruschka Detmers also portrayed the captivating sex symbol in Jean-Luc Godard's cult film Name: Carmen from 1983 with music by Beethoven and Rita Hayworth in  Love Carmen by Charles Vidor.

Who would have thought, after the premiere of this opera in 1875, that it would become an operatic "hit"? Considering the fact that the audience liked the first two acts very much, the enthusiasm in the audience dropped significantly with the successive ones. And after Act IV it blew with an icy coldness. It made the composer feel extremely bitter, as he put more heart and commitment into this work than in any previous work. Well, there was someone who predicted the upcoming success of an opera considered scandalous and iconoclastic - Tchaikovsky. In a letter to Nadezhda von Meck in July 1880, the Russian composer wrote: I am sure that in the decades from today, Carmen will become one of the most popular operas in the world. " He was not mistaken.

Starsi widzowie Teatru Wielkiego - Opery Narodowej z pewnością pamiętają wspaniałe, klasyczne wystawienie najsłynniejszej opery Georges’a Bizeta w reżyserii Lecha Majewskiego w monumentalnej scenografii Janusza Kapusty z kostiumami zaprojektowanymi przez Hannę Bakułę. Dwadzieścia trzy lata po jej premierze, realizacji Carmen na tej samej scenie podjął się popularny aktor i reżyser – Andrzej Chyra. Tym razem jednak widzowie warszawskiej sceny operowej mieli okazję zobaczyć arcydzieło światowej literatury muzycznej w zupełnie nowej, dalekiej od klasycznego ujęcia odsłonie.

Do współpracy przy tym wyzwaniu zaprosił dramaturżkę Małgorzatę Sikorską Miszczuk, w duecie z którą pracował nad wybitną operą polską XXI wieku – Czarodziejska góra wg Thomasa Manna z muzyką Pawła Mykietyna. Spektakl zaprezentowany podczas Malta Festival Poznań okazał się dużym sukcesem.

By rzucić na doskonale znany publiczności spektakl nowe światło – tandem Chyra-Miszczuk wprowadza do opery enigmatyczną postać chłopca oraz Diabła, który wraz z upływem kolejnych aktów coraz mniej przeraża małego bohatera. Symbolizuje on prawdopodobnie fatum, wobec którego bohaterowie dramatu wydają się być bezsilni. W opozycji do demona – byka atrybutem tytułowej bohaterki są wyrastające z barków skrzydła.

Georges Bizet napisał Carmen na zlecenie dyrektora paryskiej Opéra-Comique Camille’a du Locle’a. Partytura powstała na przełomie1874 i 1875 roku. Libretto na podstawie noweli Prospera Mérimée stworzyli Henri Meilhac i Ludovic Halévy. Od tamtej pory Carmen fascynuje twórców: dramaturgów, pisarzy, filmowców. Stanowi niepodważalną ikonę kobiecości. To postać zmysłowa, uwodzicielska, namiętna i tajemnicza, a jednocześnie odważna, nieprzewidywalna, temperamentna, nieokiełznana i dumna. Ponad wszystko jednak tragiczna. Jej imię funkcjonuje w powszechnej świadomości, kojarząc się nieodzownie z czymś wobec czego nie można przejść obojętnym. Istnieje w nomenklaturze niemalże każdej branży, czy to artystycznej, turystycznej, rozrywkowej, biznesowej a nawet informatycznej.

W jej postać od dekad wcielają się znakomite artystki. Partie Carmen śpiewały na scenach operowych m.in. Angela Gheorghiu, Elina Garanča, Anna Caterina Antonacci, Małgorzata Walewska, a nawet Maria Callas, która w latach 60. podejmowała się partii mezzosopranowych. Również przemysł filmowy nie potrafił oprzeć się tej postaci. Ponad sto lat temu, w 1918 roku, odbyła się huczna premiera Carmen z Polą Negri w roli tytułowej, w reżyserii Ernsta Lubitcha. Na srebrnym ekranie w urzekający symbol seksu wcieliła się również Maruschka Detmers w kultowym filmie Jean-Luca Godarda Imię: Carmen z 1983 roku z muzyką Beethovena oraz Rita Hayworth w Miłości Carmen Charlesa Vidora.

Któż by pomyślał po premierowym wystawieniu tej opery w 1875 roku, że stanie się ona operowym „hitem”? Zważywszy na to, że choć pierwsze dwa akty bardzo spodobały się publiczności, to wraz z kolejnymi entuzjazm na widowni wyraźnie spadał. A po IV akcie wiało z niej lodowatym chłodem, Wprawiło to kompozytora w stan ogromnej goryczy, gdyż włożył w to dzieło więcej serca i zaangażowania niż w jakiekolwiek wcześniejsze. Otóż był ktoś taki, kto przewidział nadchodzący sukces opery uznanej za skandaliczną i obrazoburczą – Czajkowski. W liście do Nadieżdy von Meck z lipca 1880 roku rosyjski kompozytor napisał: Jestem pewien, że w przeciągu dziesięcioleci od dnia dzisiejszego, Carmen stanie się jedną z najpopularniejszych oper świata.” Nie pomylił się.
