A femme fatale, a jealous deserter, the burning ramparts of Seville: here comes Carmen , the opera of operas, the one who transforms a habanera into a stab. On the bill, a cast as one can only dream of, including Joyce DiDonato and Michael Spyres, the heroes of the Berliozian epics conducted and recorded by John Nelson with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra. And at the pulpit, John Nelson in person, who knows better than anyone how to convey the curve of a melody and the fruity timbre of a cello or an English horn.
