Georges Bizet (1838 - 1875) was one of the most significant representatives of French opera from the second half of the nineteenth century.

The best aspects of the progressive culture of France have found expression in his works. His cheerful and temperamental music is characterized by great melodic richness and fiery feelings.

His short life was filled with turbulent and intense creative work. He has written 5 operas, Symphony in C major, music for Alphonse Dode's "Arlesian" and others.

In 1874, Georges Bizet, looking for a plot for a new opera, focused on the famous novel by the French writer Prosper Merimee (1803 - 1870) "Carmen", written in 1845.
With the creation of the libretto, the two experienced writers and theaters Henri Meliac (1831 - 1897) and Louis Halevi (1834 - 1908), authors of a large number of texts of Offenbach's operettas. The opera Carmen is one of the top achievements in all French music. This is a deeply realistic work, full of drama and sustained from beginning to end in the national spirit. The music is full of life and boiling passions.
Written in the spirit of Spanish musical folklore, it fits perfectly into the plot. But despite the Spanish themes taken from the folk songs of this people, Georges Bizet's music is a true French art.
Dramatic clashes and conflicts are depicted with deep psychological insight, and the musical characteristics of the characters are some of the most pronounced in all opera literature.

There is probably no opera house in the world that has not encroached on the famous work of Georges Bizet "Carmen". It is a dream for every mezzo-soprano to incarnate in the image of the fiery gypsy.

The opera premiered on March 3, 1875 in Paris, one year after the work was written. However, the first public performance was a failure, and the composer was accused of immorality. Only a few months later, in Vienna, Bizet was rehabilitated, and the opera Carmen was accepted as something extraordinary.
