Betrayals, jealousy, sunny southern lands. These are the atmospheres and colors of two traditional works that are juxtaposed as a diptych almost from their birth, that is, from the famous concert on December 22, 1893 at the Metropolitan Theater in New York. They are Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, a pairing typical of verist melodrama, which Mascagni himself re-proposed in 1926, conducting both operas on the same evening at the Scala in Milan.
