About the work

The classic diptychs from the literature of Italian veristic opera are operas with everyday stories and the passions of ordinary people, with contents that fascinated the stages of musical theater at the end of the 19th century. They were first staged together in 1893 on the stage of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Like most new artistic and cultural movements, verisim in Italy emerged as a response to social and economic circumstances and as a portrait of real life and became a strong literary, theatrical, musical, and later film style with great influence on various later contemporary art movements. One of the first operas of the new style, Mascagni's Cavallerio rusticano (in Slovene translation Kmečka čast), is permeated with love, jealousy, violence and honor. Also in musical terms, the work is full of themes which reflect passions imbued with passion and drama. The one-act opera was inspired by Giovanni Verga's literary proposal of the same name or a dramatic text about a real event. The drama also impressed the famous actress Eleonora Duse. The baptismal performance of the opera was staged with great success in 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. Inspired by Cavalleria’s glorious reception, Leoncavallo placed Actors, a story of a traveling acting family in the style of a commedie dell’arte, and his vision of a real tragedy from a Calabrian village two years later in a similar setting in the southern Italian countryside. Both works have fascinated audiences since their inception with distinctly elemental music, and the mastery of their authors ensures eternal art in the field of expressing extreme human emotions and passions. We entrusted the direction to an old acquaintance of the Ljubljana Opera Stage, Manfred Schweigkofler, and this time the domestic orchestra will be conducted for the first time by the internationally renowned American conductor of Italian roots, Marc Tardue.
