Although Dmitri Shostakovich, whose name our theater now bears, did not write anything especially for the Kuibyshev Opera and Ballet Theatre, but it was in Kuibyshev that he finished his legendary Seventh ("Leningrad") Symphony and listened to its first performance in the hall of our theater. Shostakovich is well known as a musician who wrote serious tragic works. But few people know that the most important Russian composer of the 20th century did not hesitate to love the light genre - operetta, gypsy singing, jazz.

The plot of the only operetta that Shostakovich composed - Moscow, Cheryomushki - was proposed to the composer in 1958 by Vladimir Mass and Mikhail Chervinsky. Shostakovich agreed and accompanied the everyday, but adventurous plot with bright, memorable music. The Moscow premiere was followed by performances in Rostov-on-Don, Odessa, Sverdlovsk, Bratislava, Prague, Magadan, Zagreb, various cities of the GDR and Czechoslovakia. And two years later, on the basis of the operetta, the film "Cheryomushki" (directed by Herbert Rappaport) was shot.

The main theme of the operetta echoes the national history of the 1950s-60s. It tells about the large-scale relocation of Muscovites from communal apartments to separate, private apartments in new buildings. It does not do without funny and touching situations that accompany this "great migration".

Пусть Дмитрий Шостакович, чье имя теперь носит наш театр, и не писал ничего специально для Куйбышевского театра оперы и балета, но именно в Куйбышеве закончил свою легендарную Седьмую («Ленинградскую») симфонию и слушал ее первое исполнение в зале нашего театра. Шостакович хорошо известен как музыкант, писавший серьезные трагические произведения. Но мало кто знает, что важнейший российский композитор XX века не стеснялся любви к легкому жанру – оперетте, цыганскому пению, джазу.

Сюжет единственной оперетты, которую сочинил Шостакович – «Москва, Черемушки», – композитору предложили в 1958 году Владимир Масс и Михаил Червинский. Шостакович согласился и сопроводил бытовой, но авантюрный сюжет яркой, запоминающейся музыкой. За московской премьерой последовали спектакли в Ростове-на-Дону, Одессе, Свердловске, Братиславе, Праге, Магадане, Загребе, разных городах ГДР и Чехословакии. А через два года на основе оперетты был снят фильм «Черёмушки» (режиссер Герберт Раппапорт).

Основная тема оперетты перекликается с отечественной историей 1950-х–60-х годов. В ней рассказывается о масштабном переезде москвичей из коммунальных квартир в отдельные, собственные в новостройках. Не обходится и без смешных и трогательных ситуаций, сопутствующих этому «великому переселению».
