Das Rechercheprojekt „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ wurde vom Ensemble Musikfabrik mitinitiiert, das der Komponistin im zweiten Teil ein umfassendes Programm widmet. Zu vier Interpretationen ihrer Werke für Tanz gesellen sich zwei Auftragswerke, die auf Dlugoszewskis interdisziplinären Ansatz reagieren.

Wie bereits im Vorjahr setzt „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ in seiner Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schaffen Lucia Dlugoszewskis produktive Akzente. Der zweite Teil des in Kollaboration mit dem Ensemble Musikfabrik erarbeiteten Programms wird deshalb mit einem Vortrag sowie der Aufführung von vier ihrer Werke eröffnet. Zu Aufführungen der im Kontext ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit der Erick Hawkins Dance Company entstandenen Stücke „Cantilever“ (1975), „Amor Elusive Empty August“ (1980), „Black Lake“ (1988) und „Depth Duende Scarecrow Other: Symphony for Seven Instruments“ (1996) gesellen sich zwei neue Auftragswerke. Bethan Morgan-Williams und Mazyar Kashian haben bereits separat mit dem Ensemble Musikfabrik zusammengearbeitet und auch zu „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ neue, von Dlugoszewski inspirierte Stücke geschrieben. Ihre Hinzunahme schafft einen interdisziplinären Dialog, der jenseits von Konventionen zwischen Generationen vermittelt. Das Programm wurde von MaerzMusik gemeinsam mit den Musikfabrik-Mitgliedern Christine Chapman und Marco Blaauw kuratiert.

„Contemplations into the Radical Others“ ist ein von MaerzMusik gemeinsam mit dem Ensemble Musikfabrik, der Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Katherine Duke und Agnese Toniutti lanciertes Rechercheprojekt zu Lucia Dlugoszewski. Nach einer ersten Ausgabe im Vorjahr wird die Auseinandersetzung mit der im Jahr 2000 verstorbenen Komponistin weiter vertieft. Die auch als Dichterin aktive Dlugoszewski studierte Ende der 1940er-Jahre bei Edgard Varèse, Grete Sultan und John Cage, beeindruckte Arnold Schönberg mit ihrem Klavierspiel und suchte in der Arbeit am präparierten Klavier nach Wegen, neue Klänge zu erschaffen. Daneben entwarf sie über hundert Instrumente, von denen einige für „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ von Musikfabrik-Mitglied Thomas Meixner rekonstruiert wurden. Dlugoszewskis Auseinandersetzung mit dem scheinbar Mondänen wie auch dem radikal Anderen setzte auf die Unmittelbarkeit von Musik. Dabei arbeitete sie nicht nur hinter den Kulissen als Komponistin für die Erick Hawkins Dance Company, sondern trat – in poetischer Manier – oftmals auch auf der Bühne neben den Tänzer*innen auf. Ihr Werk wird in Kollaboration mit dem Kölner Ensemble Musikfabrik mit demselben Duktus in den Vordergrund gerückt, in dem sie es einst konzipierte: als Ausdruck der Freiheit von Klang, der wiederum dem Publikum Momente der Freiheit bieten sollte. Im zweiten Teil von „Contemplations into the Radical Others“ präsentiert das Ensemble einige ihrer Stücke erstmals in Europa, nachdem die Partituren aus vorhandenen Aufnahmen aufwendig rekonstruiert wurden. Neben einem Konzertabend mit der Musikfabrik, drei auf Dlugoszewski reagierende Auftragswerke sowie eines umfassenden Laboratoriums, in dem ihre Musik, ihr Klang und ihre Philosophie ausgiebig untersucht und diskutiert werden sollen, schließt das diesjährige Programm Auftritte der Pianistin Toniutti sowie der Choreograf*innen Duke und Edivaldo Ernesto mit Mitgliedern der Erick Hawkins Dance Company und in Berlin ansässigen Tänzer*innen ein. Ebenso werden im Rahmen des Projekts drei Auftragswerke von Bethan Morgan-Williams, Mazyar Kashian und Elena Rykova aufgeführt, die künstlerisch auf Dlugoszewski antworten.

“Contemplations into the Radical Others” was co-initiated by Ensemble Musikfabrik, who are dedicating a comprehensive programme to the composer in the second part of the research project. Four interpretations of her works for dance are complemented by two commissioned works that respond to Dlugoszewski’s interdisciplinary approach.

As with last year, “Contemplations into the Radical Others” sets productive accents in its examination of Lucia Dlugoszewski’s work. The second part of the project, devised in collaboration with Ensemble Musikfabrik, will open with a lecture and a concert showcasing a few of her works. Performances of “Cantilever” (1975), “Amor Elusive Empty August” (1980), “Black Lake” (1988) and “Depth Duende Scarecrow Other: Symphony for Seven Instruments” (1996), which were created through her collaboration with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, will be complemented by two newly commissioned works: Bethan Morgan-Williams and Mazyar Kashian have already worked separately with Ensemble Musikfabrik and have also written new pieces inspired by Dlugoszewski for “Contemplations into the Radical Others”. Their addition creates an interdisciplinary dialogue that mediates between generations and beyond conventions. The programme was co-curated by MaerzMusik and Musikfabrik members Christine Chapman and Marco Blaauw.

“Contemplations into the Radical Others” is a research project on Lucia Dlugoszewski launched by MaerzMusik with Ensemble Musikfabrik, the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Katherine Duke and Agnese Toniutti. After kicking off last year, the endeavour continues with a deeper exploration of the life and work of the composer, who died in 2000. Dlugoszewski, who was also active as a poet, studied with Edgard Varèse, Grete Sultan and John Cage in the late 1940s, impressed Arnold Schönberg with her piano playing and sought ways to create new sounds in her work on the prepared piano. She also designed over a hundred instruments, some of which have been reconstructed for “Contemplations into the Radical Others” by Musikfabrik member Thomas Meixner. Dlugoszewski’s exploration of the seemingly mundane as well as the radically different focussed on the immediacy of music. Not only did she work behind the scenes as a composer for the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, she often performed poetically on stage next to the dancers. In collaboration with the Cologne-based Ensemble Musikfabrik, her work is brought to the fore with the same style in which she originally conceived it: as an expression of the freedom of sound, which in turn is meant to offer the audience moments of freedom. The ensemble is now presenting some of its pieces for the first time in Europe after painstakingly reconstructing the scores from existing recordings. In addition to a concert evening with Musikfabrik, three commissioned works in response to Dlugoszewski and a comprehensive laboratory that will thoroughly examine and discuss her music, sound and philosophy, the second part of “Contemplations into the Radical Others”, features performances by pianist Toniutti and choreographers Duke and Edivaldo Ernesto with members of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company along with Berlin-based dancers. Three commissioned works by Bethan Morgan-Williams, Mazyar Kashian and Elena Rykova will also be performed as part of the project, offering an artistic response to Dlugoszewski.
