Musique d’orfèvre, intime par excellence, la sonate en trio, pour deux instruments solistes et basse continue, modelée par Corelli, a inspiré les plus grandes figures du xviiiesiècle. Ces conversations galantes, entre la France et l’Allemagne, réunissent les œuvres de : François Couperin (1668-1733), Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764), Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) et Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767).

Le premier publie « La Françoise », extraite des Nations, en 1726, mais il se plait à rappeler dans son aveu au public que la « sonade » qui ouvre l’œuvre fut aussi la première qu’il composait, « et qui ait été composée en France ».

Jean-Marie Leclair, danseur et violoniste virtuose, célèbre pour ses concertos et ses sonates pour violon soliste, publie également plusieurs recueils de sonates en trio, dont sa Première récréation de musique (op. 6), en 1736. « D’une exécution facile », cette suite de danses gracieuse destinée à un cadre amateur est un véritable hommage à la tradition musicale française.

Johann Sebastian Bach quant à lui laisse peu de sonates en trio mais non des moindres. La Sonata sopr’il soggetto Reale a traversa, violino e continuo est dédiée au roi de Prusse Frédéric II – qui en a suggéré le thème – et fait partie des dernières œuvres que le cantor compose, en 1747, dans le goût galant moderne de Potsdam.

L’évolution du genre est toutefois déjà à l’œuvre et la viole s’émancipe de la partie de basse continue dans les Nouveaux quatuorsque Georg Philipp Telemann compose à Paris en 1738, pages vivantes, colorées et inventives qui dressent un pont vers le quatuor classique.

These gallant conversations, between France and Germany, bring together the works of: François Couperin (1668-1733), Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764), Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Georg Philipp Telemann (1681- 1767).

Jean-Marie Leclair, dancer and virtuoso violinist, famous for his concertos and sonatas for solo violin, also published several collections of trio sonatas, including his First recreation of music (op. 6), in 1736. "easy", this series of graceful dances intended for an amateur setting is a true homage to the French musical tradition.

Johann Sebastian Bach leaves few trio sonatas, but not the least. The Sonata sopr'il soggetto Reale a traversa, violino e continuo is dedicated to the King of Prussia Frederick II – who suggested the theme – and is one of the last works that the cantor composed, in 1747, in the modern gallant taste of Potsdam .

The evolution of the genre is, however, already at work and the viol frees itself from the basso continuo part in the New Quartets that Georg Philipp Telemann composed in Paris in 1738, lively, colorful and inventive pages which build a bridge to the classical quartet.
