Coppélia zieht mit ihrem makellosen Äußeren die jungen Männer einer Kleinstadt in ihren Bann. Als Franz die Schöne eines Tages am Fenster des Hauses des bizarren Spielzeugmachers Coppélius erblickt, verliebt er sich auf den ersten Blick in sie. Seine Verlobte Swanilda ist von dieser Schwärmerei nicht sonderlich angetan und spioniert Franz nach. Dabei kommt sie Coppélias Geheimnis auf die Spur: Sie ist kein Wesen aus Fleisch und Blut. Um Franz eine Lektion zu erteilen, schlüpft Swanilda daraufhin selbst in die Rolle Coppélias. Derweil will der dämonische Mechaniker Coppélius den jungen Mann verzaubern, um mit dessen Seele ein Experiment auf Leben und Tod durchzuführen…

Inhaltlich angelehnt an E.T.A. Hoffmanns Erzählung Der Sandmann (1816) aus der Sammlung Fantasie- und Nachtstücke – ein Werk der deutschen Schauerromantik – greift das Handlungsballett Coppélia das damalige Interesse an Automatenmenschen auf. Der französische Komponist Léo Delibes (1836-1891) komponierte das Stück im Jahre 1870, in dem es auch an der Pariser Oper uraufgeführt wurde. In der neuesten Fassung des Thüringischen Staatsballetts wird es noch durch die Suite „Les Animaux modèles“ von Francis Poulenc ergänzt.

In ihrer choreografischen Neuinterpretation von Coppélia erforscht Silvana Schröder wissenschaftliche Fantasien und menschliche Abgründe und erzählt diesen berühmten Stoff auf ihre ganz eigene Weise.

Coppélia captivates the young men of a small town with her flawless appearance. When Franz sees the beauty one day at the window of the house of the bizarre toymaker Coppélius, he falls in love with her at first sight. His fiancee Swanilda is not particularly taken with this crush and spies on Franz. In doing so, she discovers Coppélia's secret: She is not a creature of flesh and blood. In order to teach Franz a lesson, Swanilda then slips into the role of Coppélia herself. Meanwhile, the demonic mechanic Coppélius wants to put a spell on the young man in order to carry out an experiment on life and death with his soul...

Based on the content of ETA Hoffmann's story The Sandman (1816) from the collection of Fantasy and Night Pieces - a work of German Gothic romance - the narrative ballet Coppélia takes up the interest in automatons of the time. The French composer Léo Delibes (1836-1891) composed the play in 1870, in which it was also premiered at the Paris Opera. In the latest version of the Thuringian State Ballet, it is supplemented by the suite "Les Animaux modèles" by Francis Poulenc.

The fascination of creating artificial life is a perennial favorite and is gaining more and more importance, especially in the age of technology: What happens when a human being rises to become a creator above others? What are the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence? How can bionics still shock and provoke nowadays? In her choreographic reinterpretation of Coppélia, Silvana Schröder explores scientific fantasies and human abysses and tells this famous story in her very own way.
