Broccoli vs. Opera

An adventure opera based on Neil Gaiman's cult book, with newly written music by Mark-Anthony Turnage, one of the most performed composers of our time.

The 11-year-old girl Coraline has recently moved into a house with her kind but self-absorbed parents. The new house turns out to accommodate a mirror-inverted world, where everything looks just as usual, except that everyone has buttons instead of eyes. The other world first seems to have everything Coraline wants; attentive and playful parents, better food and more fun toys. After all, it's something that rubs. She hears mysterious children's voices, and "The Other Mother" suddenly appears very strange. And where have her real parents gone? Coraline realizes that she is the only one who can break the curse, save her parents and make sure she does not get stuck forever.

Neil Gaiman's book about the brave girl Coraline is a fantasy classic that has also been made into an animated feature film. Now it has become an opera, with music by Mark-Anthony Turnage (b. 1960) - one of the most performed composers of our time. He mixes classical music with jazz influences and the modern with the traditional. His most famous works are the opera Anna Nicole for The Royal Opera in London and the dance productions Trespass , Strapless and UNDANCE for The Royal Ballet. He has also composed several orchestral works for some of the UK's largest symphony orchestras.

Coraline is an international co-production between The Royal Opera House (UK), Theater Freiburg (DE), L'Opera de Lille (FR), Victorian Opera Company (AUS) and Folkoperan in Stockholm. Coraline premiered in London in the spring of 2018. Performed with permission from Boosey & Hawkes Publishers Ltd.
