Wanted by Mozart, this contemporary scenario on an ordinary subject has earned the work a century of purgatory before entering the great repertoire. Così is not a succession of tunes but a continuous soundtrack tuned to the clarity of Da Ponte's libretto. This is perhaps the whole “sublimity” of the work as Reynaldo Hahn called it.
