The comedy “Everybody Does It, or the School for Lovers” (1790) was the last of three operas written by Mozart in collaboration with the wonderful librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. According to contemporaries, this plot was allegedly suggested by the Austrian emperor Joseph II himself, who strongly recommended to the authors a curious case from real life. Two officers made a bet on the loyalty of their lovers. Deciding to test their feelings, they staged a hasty departure for the war, and then, disguised and disguised as aliens from the East, began to court the brides in the absence of their "real" suitors. To their complete surprise, they soon achieved reciprocity by losing their bet.

The frivolity of the opera plot, the game with morality and common sense largely determined the difficult fate of Mozart's masterpiece. Throughout the 19th and the first third of the 20th century, the libretto “Everybody Does It So” was subjected to regular revisions. Their necessity was explained by the "noble" desire to cleanse the plot from the filth of cynicism and implausibility. The realization did not immediately come that the music of Mozart and the libretto of da Ponte form a single artistic whole. Mozart's music elevates the plot to a philosophical understanding of the foundations of human life, drawing this depth precisely in the contrast between the external and internal action of the opera. The subtext of the comedy is very serious and ambiguous. Its main themes are the mystery of the mutual attraction of a man and a woman, love as an irrational element that is not subject to moral prohibitions, variability as a natural natural form of life. The ambiguity of Mozart's vision of these themes is expressed through the coexistence of different points of view of the characters, each of which is true in its own way. A frivolous trifle at first glance hides an important warning: "You can't joke with love."

The refined literary style of da Ponte contributed to the birth of one of the most sophisticated operas - not only in the work of Mozart, but also in the world opera heritage. The beauty and artistic perfection of music is amazing even for the Mozartian genius. Each of the six main characters of the opera needs to be not just a singer, but a singer-actor, not only a master of vocals, but also of dramatic dialogues that are accompanied by a harpsichord. In Russia, “Everyone does it this way” was first performed in 1813 by the artists of the German opera troupe. In Russian, it was first presented by the troupe of the Imperial Opera on the stage of the St. Petersburg Maly Theater in 1816 under the title "Test of female fidelity, or that's all what women are like." Luxurious and at the same time exquisite performance, performed in 2002 on the historical stage of the Mariinsky Theater by an Italian team led by director Walter Le Moly, perfectly conveys the intoxicating atmosphere of the opera, without leaving any of its expressive details unattended. The concert performance of the virtuoso creation of Mozart - da Ponte does not lose in the least to its stage incarnations, providing the soloists with an opportunity to demonstrate various aspects of their artistic talent, and for the public to directly enjoy the brilliant music and word.

По рассказам современников, этот сюжет был якобы подсказан самим австрийским императором Иосифом II, который настоятельно рекомендовал авторам курьёзный случай из реальной жизни. Два офицера заключили пари по поводу верности своих возлюбленных. Решив испытать их чувства, они инсценировали спешный отъезд на войну, а затем, переодетые и загримированные в пришельцев с Востока, принялись ухаживать за невестами в отсутствие их «настоящих» женихов. К полной неожиданности для себя, вскоре они добились взаимности, проиграв своё пари.

Фривольность оперной фабулы, игра с моралью и здравым смыслом во многом определили сложную судьбу моцартовского шедевра. На протяжении всего XIX – первой трети XX столетия либретто «Так поступают все» подвергали регулярным переработкам. Их необходимость объяснялась «благородным» стремлением очистить сюжет от скверны цинизма и неправдоподобия. Не сразу пришло осознание того, что музыка Моцарта и либретто да Понте образуют единое художественное целое. Моцартовская музыка возвышает сюжет до философского осмысления основ человеческой жизни, черпая эту глубину именно в контрасте внешнего и внутреннего действия оперы. Подтекст комедии оказывается весьма серьёзным и многозначным. Её главные темы — тайна взаимного притяжения мужчины и женщины, любовь как неподвластная моральным запретам иррациональная стихия, изменчивость как естественная природная форма жизни. Неоднозначность моцартовского видения этих тем выражается через сосуществование различных точек зрения героев, каждая из которых по-своему истинна. Легкомысленный на первый взгляд пустячок скрывает важное предостережение: «С любовью не шутят».

Отточенный литературный стиль да Понте способствовал рождению одной из самых утончённых опер — не только в творчестве Моцарта, но и в мировом оперном наследии. Красота и художественное совершенство музыки поразительны даже для моцартовского гения. Каждому из шести основных героев оперы требуется быть не просто певцом, но певцом-актёром, не только мастером вокала, но и драматических диалогов, которые идут в сопровождении клавесина. В России «Так поступают все» первый раз прозвучала в 1813 году в исполнении артистов немецкой оперной труппы. На русском языке она была впервые представлена труппой императорской оперы на сцене петербургского Малого театра в 1816 году под названием «Испытание женской верности, или Вот все каковы женщины». Роскошный и вместе с тем изысканный спектакль, осуществлённый в 2002 году на исторической сцене Мариинского театра итальянской командой во главе с режиссёром Вальтером Ле Моли, великолепно передаёт упоительную атмосферу оперы, не оставляя без внимания ни одну её выразительную деталь. Концертное исполнение виртуозного творения Моцарта – да Понте нисколько не проигрывает его сценическим воплощениям, предоставляя солистам благоприятную возможность продемонстрировать различные стороны своего артистического дарования, а публике — непосредственно насладиться блестящей музыкой и словом.
