The refined and sensual duetti da camerafor soprano and contralto of the polyhedral Agostino Steffani (who was - in addition to composer - singer, diplomat, vicar and even bishop) are the main protagonists of this program. These duets are a kind of profane cantata rich in contrapuntal games, sister games that were already common between the two violins (or other high-pitched instruments) in instrumental trio sonatas and endowed with diverse and varied structures. Apart from requiring first-rate vocal virtuosity, they are also works that demand great sensitivity in order to make us empathize with the emotions and feelings that the texts express; the theater, above all. Let’s not forget that Steffani’s music served as a model and reference for the operatic adventures of an entire Handel.
