Curro Vargas , one of the most emblematic works of 19th century Spanish lyrical repertoire, has been performed infrequently – in spite of its importance – over the past decades when it should be considered a great and universal lyrical drama. A work about obsession in love and death, on this occasion it will be performed without cuts, as it was for the première. At the same time, this will be a Curro Vargas in tune with present day sentiments, thanks to the stage production by Graham Vick and the musical direction of Guillermo García Calvo and Martín Baeza-Rubio.
Curro Vargas is an ambitious composition with operatic vocation. Ruperto Chapí composed the piece at the height of his career, investing in it all his talent and profound musical knowledge. The text is sophisticated, replete with nuances and multi-layers of interpretation, a splendid study of human behaviour which comprises a weighty ethical and moral debate. The entire work is impregnated with a sharp critique of customs and traditions, as is the novel on which it is based: El niño de la bola, by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. Below the appearance of a community which is often festive and appears inoffensive is a core of darkness, moral decay and violence.
