The new star of British cello Sheku Kanneh-Mason takes on Shostakovich’s formidable Concerto No. 1, before conductor Semyon Bychkov and the venerable Czech Philharmonic tackle the composer’s most famous symphony.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, la nouvelle star du violoncelle britannique, se confronte au redoutable Concerto n°1 de Chostakovitch, avant que Semyon Bychkov, à la tête du vénérable Czech Philharmonic, ne s’empare de sa plus célèbre symphonie.

L’Orchestre philharmonique tchèque possède une longue tradition interprétative de la musique de Chostakovitch : ses réalisations discographiques avec Karel Ančerl restent dans les mémoires. Fort de ce bagage, son directeur musical depuis 2018, Semyon Bychkov, entreprend l’ascension de la Symphonie n° 5, massif impressionnant animé, après les audaces incomprises de sa symphonie précédente, d’un esprit volontiers conquérant. Vingt-deux ans plus tard, en 1959, Rostropovitch créait le Concerto pour violoncelle n°1 de Chostakovitch, dont un des motifs sera repris dans son envoûtant Quatuor à cordes n° 8. D’exécution ardue pour le soliste, le Concerto fait montre d'une brillante écriture orchestrale, avec notamment d’importantes parties dévolues au cor et aux timbales.
