Of the first eight operas by Christoph Willibald Gluck from his time in Milan, only one Ipermestra ) has been completely preserved for posterity. After the sensational success of his first opera Artaserse (libretto by Pietro Metastasio) at the season opening of the Milan Court Theater in 1742, which far exceeded all expectations, Gluck was also commissioned with a scrittura for the next season. Gluck's second Milan opera - Demofonte - is again based on a libretto Metastasios.
Demofonte, King of Thrace, has appointed the young Dircea, secret wife of his son Timante, for the sacrifice to be made annually to the god Apollo, and the princess Creusa as his wife.
When he learns of the secret marriage of his son, he initially sticks to his decision, but thanks to Creusa's mediation, who gets the younger brother Timantes as a husband, gives in.
It would be a mistake to see signs of his later will to reform in Gluck's early operas; however, they are already impressive evidence of his personal style, which is particularly characterized by the unadorned melody and the clarity of the diatonic harmony.
