A curse weighs on the Flying Dutchman: he has to sail the oceans for all eternity without ever finding rest. He is only allowed to go ashore every seven years to look for a woman who will redeem him from his fate through unconditional love. In the dreamy Senta - she, too, a restless person who does not want to fit into a bourgeois world determined by economic interests - he finally finds what he has been looking for for so long: loyalty until death.

Richard Wagner discovered the legend of the Flying Dutchman in 1838 through Heinrich Heine's "Memoirs of Herr von Schnabelewopski". After a stormy crossing from Riga to London - Wagner was once again on the run from creditors - he chose the material for his next opera and began the composition under the still fresh impression of the unpredictable power of the sea. Against the backdrop of this wild nature, Wagner unfolds in "Holländer" the utopia of a love pointing into the transcendent as an alternative to the industrialization and economization of the 19th century - and thus finds one of the central themes of his operatic work.

With “The Flying Dutchman” director Roger Vontobel is dedicating himself to another milestone in opera history after “Fidelio” and “Il trovatore” in Mannheim.
