“This evening is the hit of the still young season,” said cultural editor Hans-Martin Koch after the premiere of THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO. “The 1000-page book condenses into a good two hours that fly by. The pace is fast, the production is lean and straightforward. Wolfgang Berthold directs with skill and always in the service of the story.” In the titular role: musical star Thomas Borchert. “Everything he sings is applauded. He really has a perfect command of the range of moods and vocal tones and is also an expressive player. (…) In addition to Thomas Borchert, who is in great demand almost constantly, Navina Heyne shapes the evening. She lets the Mercédès appear as a strong woman and sings both lyrically and dramatically with touching intensity,” says Koch and continues: “The right conductor for this passionate sound is Gaudens Bieri. He chases the Lüneburg Symphony Orchestra, who are in a very good mood, through all emotional layers. It's amazing how well the texts remain understandable despite all the colorful noise. Edmond Dantès wird Opfer einer infamen Intrige, gerade in dem Moment, in dem sein berufliches und privates Glück perfekt scheint. Soeben zum Kapitän befördert, feiert er die Verlobung mit der schönen Mercédès – und im nächsten Moment verliert er nicht nur seine Freiheit, sondern auch seine große Liebe an einen Widersacher. Viele Jahre sitzt Dantès im Gefängnis, während sich seine Feinde an Reichtum und gesellschaftlicher Anerkennung erfreuen. Ein Mitgefangener verrät ihm den Weg zu einem Schatz auf der Mittelmeerinsel Monte Christo, den Dantès zu einer ausgeklügelten Rache nutzt: Als geheimnisvoller „Graf von Monte Christo“ kehrt er zurück …
Nach JEKYLL & HYDE und DRACULA vertonte Frank Wildhorn 2009 einen weiteren großen und populären Stoff der Weltliteratur. Mit seinem Buch- und Songtextautor Jack Murphy verdichtete er den tausendseitigen Roman auf die zentralen Motive – ein durch unschuldiges Leiden zerstörtes Glück, eine grausame und doch verständliche Rache und eine späte Rückkehr zur Liebe. Für die Produktion am Theater Lüneburg übernimmt Thomas Borchert die Rolle des Edmond Dantès – wie schon bei der umjubelten Uraufführung in St. Gallen!
