Death and a harlequin philosophize about the world. A drummer proclaims war of all against all in the name of the emperor of Atlantis. Thereupon death refuses to serve. Nobody can die anymore and the emperor loses his power. Death confronts him and proclaims that he would return if the emperor were the first to follow him.

A visionary opera of horror and hope in the Neustrelitz theater. It's about humane coexistence and the continued existence of humanity. The production of the opera of the "Emperor of Atlantis", which is performed in the Neustrelitz Theater, is for today. Aren't its themes of central importance in our present as well? One only needs to look at the various news items and learn about the many armed conflicts between people, about terror and cruelty, but also about uprisings and peaceful revolutions. The use of the media for propaganda is also striking. And last but not least: It is about the possibility of humane coexistence and the continued existence of humanity and earth!

Viktor Ullmann wrote his visionary opera “ The Emperor of Atlantis ” in 1943/1944 during his last lifetime in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. The piece was supposed to be premiered there and was composed for the musicians and singers there. "It should be emphasized that I was supported in my work by Theresienstadt and not inhibited, that we were by no means just sitting complaining about Babylon's rivers and that our cultural will was adequate to our will to live." Der Tod und ein Harlekin philosophieren über die Welt. Ein Trommler verkündet im Namen des Kaisers von Atlantis den Krieg aller gegen alle. Daraufhin verweigert der Tod seine Dienste. Niemand kann mehr sterben und der Kaiser verliert seine Macht. Der Tod tritt ihm entgegen und verkündet, dass er wiederkehren würde, wenn der Kaiser der erste wäre, der ihm folgt.

Eine visionäre Oper von Schrecken und Hoffnung im Theater Neustrelitz. Es geht um ein humanes Miteinander und um das Fortbestehen der Menschheit. Die Inszenierung der Oper des »Kaisers von Atlantis«, welche im Theater Neustrelitz aufgeführt wird, ist für die heutige Zeit. Sind seine Themen nicht auch in unserem Jetzt von zentraler Bedeutung? Man braucht sich nur die verschiedenen Nachrichten anschauen und erfährt von den vielen kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den Menschen, von Terror und Grausamkeit, aber auch von Aufständen und friedlichen Revolutionen. Auffällig ist auch die Nutzung der Medien zur Propaganda. Und nicht zuletzt: Es geht um die Möglichkeit eines humanen Miteinander und um das Fortbestehen von Menschheit und Erde!

Viktor Ullmann schrieb seine visionäre Oper „Der Kaiser von Atlantis“ 1943/1944 während seiner letzten Lebenszeit im Konzentrationslager Theresienstadt. Das Stück sollte ebendort zur Uraufführung gelangen und ist komponiert für die dort vorhandene Musiker- und Sängerbesetzung. „Zu betonen ist, dass ich in meiner Arbeit durch Theresienstadt gefördert und nicht etwa gehemmt worden bin, dass wir keineswegs bloß klagend an Babylons Flüssen saßen und dass unser Kulturwille unserem Lebenswillen adäquat war.“ (Viktor Ullmann)
