In Alexander Zemlinskys Oper Der Kreidekreis, 1933 in Zürich nach dem gleichnamigen
Schauspiel von Klabund erstaufgeführt, geht es um die Willkür der Mächtigen und den
immerwährenden Kampf Gut gegen Böse und Arm gegen Reich – Themen, die uns bis
heute beschäftigen.
Zu Beginn der Oper wird das mittelose chinesische Mädchen Haitang von ihrer Mutter
an den Besitzer eines Etablissements verkauft. Unmittelbar zuvor hat sich ihr Vater, der
seine Steuern nicht mehr zahlen konnte, erhängt. Ein Prinz verliebt sich in sie, doch Haitang wird ausgerechnet vom reichen Steuerpächter Ma, der ihren Vater in den Selbstmord getrieben hat, als Zweitfrau ersteigert. Die unfruchtbare Erstfrau Mas fürchtet um
ihr Erbe, als Haitang einen Sohn zur Welt bringt. Hasserfüllt vergiftet sie ihren Ehemann
und schiebt die Schuld auf Haitang. Sie behauptet ferner, sie selbst wäre die leibliche
Mutter des Kindes, besticht Zeug*innen und Richter, um als Erbin und Mutter anerkannt
zu werden. Doch in auswegloser Lage wendet sich unverhofft das Schicksal der unschuldigen Haitang.
Schon im Schauspiel, das 1925 uraufgeführt und danach von etwa 100 Bühnen nachgespielt wurde, vermischen sich die stilistischen Ebenen zwischen Märchenstück und
kriminalistischem Sozialdrama, steht Karikaturistisches neben emotionalem Pathos.
Klabund hatte sich dabei an einem chinesischen Singspiel aus dem 14.Jahrhundert orientiert. In Zemlinskys letzter vollendeter Oper wird dieser faszinierende Mix aus Dramatik und Lyrik noch verstärkt. Schon am Anfang sorgen schwüle Saxofonklänge für das nötige Kolorit zum Slow-Motion-Ballett des Bordellbesitzers. Der Komponist verschachtelt
Spätromantik mit Kabarett-Szenen à la Kurt Weills Mahagonny, das Zemlinsky 1931 dirigierte. Er mischt Mahler und Strauss mit fernöstlichen Klängen, weiß die Balance aber
durch differenzierten Einsatz von Stimme und Orchester zu erreichen. So pendelt die
abwechslungsreiche und farbige Partitur situationsgemäß zwischen musikalisch subtil
gestützten Sprechpartien, kammermusikalisch feinen Lyrismen und hochdramatischen
Ausbrüchen. Regie führt Sebastian Ritschel, seit 2022 Intendant am Theater Regensburg.

At the beginning of the opera, the penniless Chinese girl Haitang is sold by her mother to the owner of an
establishment. Immediately before, her father, who could no longer pay his taxes, hanged himself. A prince falls in
love with her, but Haitang is bought at auction as a second wife by the wealthy tax collector Ma, of all people, who
has driven her father to commit suicide. Barren first wife Mas fears for her inheritance when Haitang gives birth to a
son. Filled with hatred, she poisons her husband and blames Haitang. She further claims that she herself is the
biological mother of the child, bribing witnesses and judges to be recognized as heir and mother. But in a hopeless
situation, the fate of the innocent Haitang takes an unexpected turn.
The premiere
Even in the play, which premiered in 1925 and was then re-enacted by around 100 stages, the stylistic levels of
fairy tale play and criminalistic social drama are mixed up , caricaturism stands alongside emotional pathos.
Oper
Alexander Zemlinsky's opera Der Kreidekreis, first performed in Zurich in 1933 based on Klabund's play of the
same name, deals with the arbitrariness of the powerful and the never-ending battle of good against evil and poor
against rich - topics that still occupy us today.
Klabund based his work on a Chinese musical comedy from the 14th century. In Zemlinsky's last completed opera,
this fascinating mix of drama and lyricism is intensified. Right from the start, sultry saxophone sounds provide the
necessary color for the brothel owner's slow-motion ballet. The composer interlaces late romanticism with cabaret
scenes à la Kurt Weill's Mahagonny, which Zemlinsky conducted in 1931. He mixes Mahler and Strauss with
sounds from the Far East, but knows how to achieve the balance through the differentiated use of voice and
orchestra. Depending on the situation, the varied and colorful score oscillates between musically subtly supported
speech parts, chamber music-like fine lyricisms and highly dramatic outbursts. Sebastian Ritschel, director at the
Theater Regensburg since 2022, is directing.
