A roast venison is supposed to crown the engagement of the elderly village schoolteacher Baculus and his young, clever peasant ward Gretchen. But the necessary poaching trip to the Count's park almost costs Baculus a position and a bride. Gretchen's offer to see the Count himself doesn't seem opportune given his notorious sexual greed.
