DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES by Francis Poulenc DIRECTOR Jérémie Rhorer DIRECTED BY Olivier Py Faith, courage and redemption are the main themes of the Dialogues des Carmélites, which are set against the terror and turmoil of revolutionary France. The libretto, inspired by the homonymous theatrical play by Georges Bernanos, premiered at the Teatro alla Scala in 1957. Musical references for Poulenc are on this occasion Monteverdi, Musorgskij and above all Debussy: the rejection of the effect that arises from dramatic contrasts, the obsessive attention to the "verbal rhythm" of the text, the theming of silence and the use of symbolic-allusive Leitmotifs are the distinctive features of the score.
